In the turbulent world of politics, it’s rare to find messages that transcend the usual noise. Recently, a friend shared a poignant reflection about a political leader stepping down due to age and the disappointing, unkind response from his opponent. This reflection sparked a broader contemplation about our choices in responding to others.
The Reflection
The music teacher emphasized the importance of grace and compassion, lamenting the lack of empathy displayed in the political sphere. This highlighted the pervasive presence of meanness and the need for more loving and humane responses.
My Response
After reading this heartfelt reflection, I felt compelled to respond:
“Thanks for your post. It’s disheartening to see people choosing meanness, miserliness, and pettiness. It brings back memories of school bullies and their weak-spirited followers, harming animals and destroying nature. Sadly, such behavior exists, reminding us of Rumi’s words: ‘Choose love.'”
Rumi’s Ghazal
Inspired by my wife’s reminder of Rumi’s wisdom, I revisited one of his ghazals, which beautifully encapsulates the essence of choosing love over meanness:
I am happy of heart because of the friend, just as you have seen.
My soul is filled with lights, just as you have seen.
Choose love — love!
Without the sweet presence of love,
life is a burden, just as you have seen.
It is the love of Shams-i Din that bestows soul in Tabriz,
just as you have seen.
—Rumi’s Ghazal 3031 (1st, 6th and 8th verse line translated by Jeffrey Osborne)
Choosing Meanness
Choosing meanness is often a reaction to fear and insecurity. It can be a way to assert control and feel superior, but it perpetuates negativity and erodes trust and goodwill.
Choosing Love
Choosing love requires strength and intentionality. It means responding to negativity with empathy and kindness. Love fosters connection and healing, building bridges instead of walls.
Practical Steps for Choosing Love
– Mindfulness: Cultivate awareness of your thoughts and actions.
– Empathy: See the world from others’ perspectives.
– Forgiveness: Let go of past hurts to make space for healing.
– Acts of Kindness: Engage in kind actions to nurture well-being.
Conclusion
In the face of difficulty and negativity, we can choose empathy and compassion. Grace and love are signs of strength. Let’s remember Rumi’s call to “choose love.” This choice can transform our lives and the world around us. Let’s make the conscious decision to choose love every day.
